Biodiversity and Limestone Pavements

PLEDGE OF NON-USAGE

RMC Aggregates are one of the largest suppliers of building materials in the world.  They also own the DIY and Garden Centre chain ‘Great Mills’. They have recently become involved in the campaign to safeguard Limestone Pavement.

In order to promote limestone pavement conservation, RMC have produced a ‘Pledge of Non-Usage’ for the company and it’s subsidiaries, which will be reinforced by improved education about the threat to biodiversity that the destruction of limestone pavements will cause.  In addition to this, RMC have provided funding for the Limestone Pavement Action Group.

RMC's pledge makes five committments:

  • To ensure that Great Mills DIY stores ( and any subsidiaries) are not selling water-worn limestone;

  • To establish whether landscaping schemes associated with any RMC properties include water-worn limestone;

  • If they do so, to discuss with the voluntary sector Limestone Pavement Action Group, on a case by case basis, what action should be taken;

  • To ensure that limestone pavement is not exploited in any existing quarry or when the RMC Group acquire a limestone aggregates quarry with limestone pavement;

  • To assist the Limestone Pavement Habitat Action Plan Working Group in promoting greater awareness towards the protection of limestone pavement habitats and their biodiversity by discussions with suppliers, trade associations and the media.
